A Texas-sized Shabbaton in Aggieland

Texas A&M Chabad will host the fourth annual Intercollegiate Texas Shabbaton next month in College Station. On the weekend of February 10-12, college students from many Texas universities and as far away as Oklahoma and New Orleans will head to the Rohr Chabad Jewish Student Center at Texas A&M.

Rabbi Chaim Lazaroff of Houston’s Uptown Chabad and UT-Austin student Daniel Kasoff of Spring, Texas enjoy last year’s Shabbaton

Previous years attracted well over 150 students and a large turnout is anticipated. Throughout the weekend, there will be contemporary Torah and dance workshops, lively Shabbat services, dancing, Shabbat dinner and lunch, all within an atmosphere of great student camaraderie from around the Southern Region. One of the highlights of the weekend is the Motzei Shabbat musical havdallah and barbecue carnival, where passions flow freely at the kumzitz drum circle around the fire.
Chabad Houses on campus have grown tremendously over the past 40 years and their impact on Jewish life is being felt at universities across the nation. Thousands of Jewish students participate in Chabad’s many programs. From study groups to Shabbat dinners, students know that Chabad is their home away from home on Campus.
Students are encouraged to register early. Registration for the Shabbaton including all meals, a free t-shirt and entry into a special raffle is $54. Early bird registration for $36 ends on January 31. Until February 4, a special Chabad rate of $89 is offered for a double occupancy room at the neighboring La Quinta Inn.
