If you’ve ever wondered what “Back to the Future” would look like as a musical, Fair Park has your answer. Running until March 30, “Back to the Future: The Musical” delivers an electrifying stage adaptation of the beloved 1985 film, packed with jaw-dropping special effects, nostalgic charm and a healthy dose of humor.
The show’s biggest triumph is its technical wizardry. The set design is a marvel, with large-scale pieces seamlessly sliding into place and a massive projection screen creating dynamic backdrops that shift effortlessly between scenes. But the true star of the show — aside from its cast—is the DeLorean. Ingeniously rigged to “drive” across the stage through clever staging and hidden mechanics, the time-traveling car is an impressive sight, enhanced by glowing sci-fi embellishments that make it feel straight out of the future.
Fans of the original film will find the musical largely faithful to the source material, though it leans further into comedy. Doc Brown, in particular, is portrayed with a more overtly comedic flair, adding a zany, almost cartoonish energy to the role. The show also embraces some new thematic elements, contrasting life in the 1950s with the present day and reinforcing messages of perseverance and chasing your dreams.

Among the cast, two performances stand out: Doc Brown, whose over-the-top antics command attention, and George McFly, whose exaggerated nerdy mannerisms — long, awkward strides and all — make for some of the show’s funniest moments. Lorraine, Marty’s mother, also shines with a charming presence. And while every performer holds their own, special mention goes to the actor playing the diner worker (and future mayor) Goldie Wilson, whose vocals are a highlight of the production.
Unlike the film, which relied on a few iconic musical moments, the stage adaptation features an original score. While the songs may not be instantly memorable, they’re undeniably fun, especially when paired with the show’s energetic choreography. From the pep-rally-style numbers to the swooning romance of the “Enchantment Under the Sea” dance, the musical numbers keep the energy high.
With its mix of slapstick humor and nostalgic references, “Back to the Future: The Musical” is a crowd-pleaser for all generations. Kids will crack up at the physical comedy, while adults will appreciate the throwbacks to the film’s classic moments.
Ultimately, this isn’t just a rehash of the original — it’s a fresh and dazzling interpretation that might even make you wonder if experiencing “Back to the Future” as a musical is the best way to enjoy the iconic story.
