Dear Dallas Community,

In the wake of the devastating Texas flash floods over the Fourth of July weekend, our hearts are broken with yours. The loss of so many lives from our own neighborhoods has left an ache that words cannot fully express.

We mourn Lila Bonner, Hadley Hanna, Blair and Brooke Harber, Janie Hunt, Hanna and Rebecca Lawrence, Wynne Naylor, Eloise Peck, and all the beautiful lives that were cut short. Their memories have become woven into the very fabric of our city, and their absence is deeply felt by every faith, school, and family. Whether Jewish or not, we are united by our shared humanity and the universal pain of loss.

Across Highland Park and North Dallas, green ribbons now adorn trees as a symbol of solidarity and remembrance for the girls lost at Camp Mystic. For those who did not attend Camp Mystic, families and friends are tying ribbons in their favorite colors, honoring each unique spirit and story. Jewish institutions have joined this tribute, displaying ribbons on their campuses and properties.

Our tradition teaches us the importance of chessed, loving-kindness, and tikkun olam, repairing the world. In this spirit, we invite you to join us in planting trees in Israel in memory of all those we’ve lost. The trees will be planted by the Jewish National Fund-USA’s Children’s Garden in Israel — a special place dedicated to nurturing life and hope for future generations. Planting a tree is a living tribute — a way to ensure that even in grief, we nurture hope and life for generations to come.

Let us come together as one community to honor these lives. We ask you to plant a tree in Israel, whether in memory of a specific person or as a collective gesture of compassion and solidarity. Each tree will stand as a testament to love, resilience, and the enduring bonds that connect us all.
