Dallas Doings
By Sharon Wisch-Ray

I have a confession to make. Like many Jews of Ashkenazic descent, I suffer from Crohn’s Disease, an autoimmune condition that attacks the small intestine.
I am fortunate that, since my diagnosis 20-plus years ago, my symptoms are mild and I can handle them most of the time without medication. However, others are not so lucky and wage a daily war against this and the other inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), ulcerative colitis.
This Saturday. May 19, Take Steps for Crohn’s and Colitis will hold their annual walkathon at 4:30 p.m. at the Amphitheater at Oak Point Park in Plano. Nationwide, this is the largest fundraising event for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. There is still time to register and you can walk the short course as part of a team, or as an individual.
Many patients feel that they are alone in their struggle with IBD, not knowing how to explain to others what they go through. Take Steps provides the perfect environment for patients and their families to come together and know they are not alone in this fight. The night is filled with music, food, kids’ activities, local entertainment and most importantly, the company of hundreds of people who truly understand the impacts of IBD.

These students are invited to participate in the Duke TIP seventh grade talent search and take either the ACT or the SAT. The students take the SAT/ ACT alongside college-bound 11th- and 12th-graders.
Duke TIP provides all talent search participants with a comparative results summary to help interpret their scores. Some high-scoring students are invited to participate in Duke TIP’s summer programs that take place at Duke University and other colleges and universities around the country.

Food Bank honors Temple Shalom

Temple Shalom was recently named one of The North Texas Food Bank’s (NTFB) 2012 winners of its annual “Dishing Out Gratitude” awards program.
The winners were revealed during a dinner reception April 16 at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Dallas. Temple Shalom Rabbi Andrew Paley accepted the award on behalf of the synagogue.
Companies and local supporters such as the Ritz-Carlton Dallas, Barefoot Wine & Bubbly, Good Habit Media and pianist Debbie Austin helped make the event meaningful and elegant.
Recipients of the awards have shown exemplary efforts in passionately pursuing a hunger-free community. The awards were presented to individuals and corporations that have embraced and advanced NTFB’s five core values: do what needs to be done; do what is right with urgency; steward and leverage resources with integrity and in an authentic, transparent way; respect diversity of individuals, thought and viewpoints; celebrate passion for our world and the people who live in it.
