Jewish summer camp has long been recognized as a powerful experience for nurturing Jewish identity, fostering lifelong friendships and creating a deep sense of belonging. Each year, the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas helps ensure more children can access that experience through its support of One Happy Camper, a national initiative that makes Jewish overnight camp more accessible to families.
This year, through One Happy Camper, the Federation awarded first-time camper incentive grants to local families and underwrote need-based camp scholarships through Jewish Children’s Regional Service, helping reduce financial barriers and encourage participation in Jewish summer camps.
The One Happy Camper program, a need-blind incentive grant program of the Foundation for Jewish Camp with local implementation and funding, provides first-time Jewish overnight camper incentive grants designed to introduce children and families to the impact of Jewish camp.
“Jewish summer camp remains one of the most effective ways to strengthen Jewish identity and connection,” said Rabbi Mordechai Harris, chief impact officer of the Federation. “Camp creates an immersive environment where Jewish values are lived every day — through community, ritual, friendship and joy. By supporting One Happy Camper and underwriting need-based overnight camp scholarships for our local families through our partners at JCRS, we’re investing in experiences that shape who our children become and how they connect to Jewish life long after the summer ends.”
Research and experience show that Jewish camp alumni are more likely to remain engaged in Jewish life, develop leadership skills and feel a strong sense of responsibility to their community. From Shabbat celebrations and Hebrew songs to meaningful peer relationships, camp provides a formative setting that blends fun with purpose.
Robert French, CEO of the Federation, emphasized the long-term significance of the investment. “When we support our children attending Jewish summer camp, we’re investing in strengthening our Jewish future,” French said. “The funding we provide for One Happy Camper grants represents more than financial assistance. It reflects our commitment to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to build a strong Jewish identity, feel a sense of belonging and grow into the next generation of proud Jewish leaders.”
By supporting Jewish camp through programs like One Happy Camper, the Federation continues its mission to strengthen Jewish life at every stage. Through community partnerships, the Federation helps ensure that meaningful Jewish experiences — like summer camp — remain accessible and impactful for families across Greater Dallas.
One Happy Camper is still accepting applications for summer 2026. For more information, visit jewishdallas.org or contact Ariel Light at alight@jewishdallas.org.
