Sam Abrams is flanked by Cary Rossel, left, and fund namesake Bradley Rossel at the Community Homes for Adults annual meeting.
Sam Abrams, the first recipient of the Bradley R. Rossel Scholarship from the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation, is sparking hope and fueling dreams for adults with disabilities.
A resident of CHAI (Community Homes for Adults, Inc.) and a dedicated student at Hugs Training Academy, Sam has become the inaugural recipient of the Bradley R. Rossel Scholarship Fund. At Hugs Training Academy, adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities gain essential skills for careers in food service and hospitality.
When asked about Sam, his mother, Carolyn Abrams, lights up as she shares how much he’s enjoying the experience.

Inspired by Bradley Rossel’s journey overcoming physical, emotional and learning challenges, his family established the scholarship to honor his legacy and contributions to the community. Longtime stewards of a donor-advised fund at DJCF, Beverly and Cary Rossel engaged in heartfelt conversations about personal values and legacy with the Foundation. Those discussions led to the creation of two scholarship funds:
The Chef Willy O. Rossel Scholarship Fund, honoring Cary’s father, a celebrated culinary icon posthumously inducted into the Braniff Airlines Foundation 2024 Hall of Fame
The Bradley R. Rossel Scholarship Fund, recognizing Bradley’s achievements by supporting adults with disabilities pursuing careers in the culinary and hospitality industries.
The Bradley R. Rossel Scholarship Fund brings this vision to life through a partnership with Hugs Café and the Dallas College Culinary, Pastry and Hospitality Center — ensuring Bradley’s legacy empowers future culinary professionals each day.
Sam’s achievement embodies resilience and opportunity. His story is a powerful reminder that with belief, support and a legacy of excellence, life’s challenges can become stepping stones toward a brighter future.
He is one of nearly 90 students receiving scholarships from the DJCF this year.
