Singing our way into Tu B’Shevat

By Laura Seymour

In the middle of a storm and freezing weather, it is hard to think about getting ready for Tu B’Shevat, but it is here, and we celebrate “the birthday of the trees” even as we worry that our trees will fall under the ice. However, this is the best time to think about how important trees and nature are for all of us. The message starts in Genesis — we are to care for the earth, and it is in our hands. This is the lesson we must pass on to our children.

When the ground is free of ice, get to the store and buy lots of dried fruit (actually, it is a good thing to have in the house when you are not able to get to the store — it is always ready to eat!). The tradition of a Tu B’Shevat Seder is a wonderful way to celebrate this special birthday. Eating fruits in different categories (with outsides you can’t eat, pit inside, eat all, plus some wheat and, of course, some wine) allows us to recognize differences and value the uniqueness of our world — and ourselves. The best part is finding fruit you have never tried before, and there are so many new varieties out there. There are many different seders online, from simple to more involved, with lessons galore. Do something someone else has created or make your own. The only essential part is to add blessings — the message of gratitude is what this is all about.

Another way to celebrate is through song. The messages in music are often missed as we enjoy the melody. Children’s songs have lessons for all of us. At the GECC and at Camp Chai, we sing many that stick with you, even when you would like to get them out of your head. We take the time to talk about the messages in them. Here is our favorite for this special holiday — “For Trees” by Ellen Allard.

‘For Trees’

This lovely tree standing before us,

Planted by someone a long time ago.

Someone with hope, a hope for tomorrow.

With the dream of the future right here in this tree.

Chorus

So raise your hands up high

For all the world to see,

Everyone stand up — for trees!

Verse

The thing about trees that is so amazing:

In living, they give us all that we need.

They give us food, shelter and beauty,

And they give us the air, the air that we breathe.

Chorus

Singing this song reminds us that it is our job to be the guardians of the earth — Shomrim Adamah. So let’s celebrate and stand up for trees.
