Raising money to support those living with ALS, the Thoughtworks Doc’s Derby was hosted in memory of Dr. Richard “Rick” S. Levy z”l, Sunday, July 12, at Spirit Park in Allen. Held just five weeks after Levy’s June 4 passing, the fields were filled with family, friends and supporters.
Levy could be seen on the fields of the Aaron Family JCC and in the Shalom Softball League for more than 25 years. He was more than beloved. Longtime friend and fellow Shalom League member Zane Belyea said the derby was meant to happen with Levy at home plate.
With independent pledges received and 40 players swinging for 84 home runs in Levy’s name, $40,543.95 had been raised at press time.
“We started planning this after a bunch of the guys and Rick went to a Mavs game last year,” said Belyea. “After pulling some strings to make accommodations, we were sitting in a suite having a great guys’ night out. While we were there, Rick suggested making the Home Run Derby, which closes out the Shalom League’s spring season each year, an annual event with a request to support the ALS Association.”
“It was amazing how it came together with so many people wanting to make it a success,” Belyea added. “I’m usually the one being asked for donations for events around the community but now, as I was making the calls, so many were coming through. It was really beautiful.”
All participants wore the number 29 to honor their fallen softball brother. Levy’s family was present, along with friends and family from around the country.
“This Derby was different from any other. The sound of the crowd every time a ball left the park was amazing,” said Shalom League Commissioner Cesar Garza. “Players kept taking all their swings even after advancing, just to hit more home runs was incredible!”
“Thank you to everyone who participated, donated, volunteered, and helped make this day so special,” said Garza. “Let’s continue to honor Doc’s legacy the same way he lived his life, with friendship, generosity and showing up for others.”
